A stunning winters day here in Hanmer Springs, time for 10 days at home (well almost). The last month has seen me traveling the length of the country, a combination of wine consulting, motivational speaking and charity works, interspersed with a few trips home.
You may of noticed that for 2 days the website (along with about 800 others) got hit with a malware attack, thanks to the team at Hairy Lemon we are back up and running again, aoplogies for any hassles it may of caused!
Some feedback from a recent conference:
Hi Mark
Thanks so much for your excellent presentation last week at conference. Everyone who went raved about how much they enjoyed listening to you speak. One of my friends who went said your story brought a tear to her eye and it was the highlight of the conference for her. I also overheard some guys who I didn't know say that they enjoyed the other international speakers but in their words it was " the same old, same old". They then went on to say that Mark Inglis was the real deal with an amazing personal story to tell. I know you must hear this all the time but it is nice to know that what you do makes a difference and has a big impact on people.
All the best Mark!

Winter is here! 3 decent snowfalls in Hanmer over the last month, some stunning frosty clear days - might need to get the ski legs waxed up!
I've been busy travelling the country presenting at corporate and charity events, it is great to see employers investing in their staff, their greatest asset!
A recent comment was
'Dear Mark
Your participation on our awards evening was absolutely sensational. The hype and positive attitude you created was nothing short of brilliant. And, the guys just loved the interaction and the intimacy of the wine discussions, and also the honesty and drama of your exploits.
You really made the evening for our stores and I want to thank you very sincerely for the time you spent with us.'
Great to see when you make an impact, if you need my services, just hit the CONTACT button!

Hard to believe time goes so fast! I have been talking to schools last week in Boston, NY, Philly and DC, now in Nashville with the team at Montgomery Bell.
Off home on Friday, land Sunday morning, say 'Hi' to Anne and the family then off on our Nepal adventure on Tuesday.
I am heading over early to catch up with my Nepalese friends and be ready when the Limbs4All Adventure team arrive. Still a few more presentations here in Nashville first!

It's been a great 2 weeks of training, lots of climbing Jollies Pass and walking the dogs on the flat, but now it is planes and tand trains for 4 weeks in Canada and the USA.
The stumps are changing every day, always a new challenge!
School/Charity Presentations
I have had the opportunity to talk and workshop with students from Unlimited, Redcliffs and the Oxford Area schools in the last 2 weeks - thanks guys for your energy and great questions! More schools, charities and hospitals to come in North America in the next few weeks.

February already! 6 or so weeks to go before the Gokyo Lakes trek, 2 weeks training and 4 weeks traveling for me through Canada and the USA - I'll be trying walk up as many stairs as possible I can assure you!
I can now make the 4km uphil effort (Jollies Pass here in Hanmer) without a 'leg off' break, so well on track I hope.
School and Charity Presentations
It's the start of the school year so the start of school visits, 3 schools over the next 2 weeks, I just wish I had the resources to visit all the schools that ask every year, apologies to those (and the well deserving) charities that miss out, always keep trying though!

Well just 9 weeks to go before our much anticipated Gokyo Lakes Trek.
Training at the moment is a combination of increasing strength (hill work) and most importantly getting the stumps used to trekking day after day. Doing any of the trekking days by themselves is no problem, the trick is to be able to train and look after the stumps for 17 days in a row!
All we need now is some real summer!

Just seems like I got used to writing 2009 and now need to remember it is 2010!
11 weeks until our Gokyo Lakes/Limbs4All trek and traing is going great.
Mornings are about 60 minutes uphill, ride down (I take the dogs along, they are getting very fit as well!), afternoons a 30 minute or so mountain bike ride on my single speed, nothing dramatic, last thing I need is to go over the handle bars and break my shoulder again!
The stumps are changing every day which is a challenge, each day slightly altering the fit of the socket to ensure no damage!
If you are training for the trip, get started with about an hour of walking each day for the first month, then slowly increase the intensity (or time if you have it) once a good base has been established.
Do get great trekking footwear and start using them now, also the pack you will use and trekking poles - I strongly recommend Pacer Poles, they are unique in their design, check them out at Pacer Poles
I can source them here in NZ, yell if you need a pair, I never go into the hills without mine!

Just back from a fabulous Christmas with Anne, cruising the Fiji Islands with Blue Lagoon Cruises, 12 weeks to go until Nepal and the Gokyo Lakes Trek so time to get serious with the training.
As a double amputee training is more complex than just training the muscles, the stumps and how they fit in the legs need training as well.
At the moment I am doing between 40 to 90 min of steady uphill walking/striding - to avoid damaging my stumps on the way down I push my mountain bike up and ride down - that way I can get in the work without damage.
Over the next few weeks the time uphill will increase and I will start to do some downhill work as well.
I'll keep you posted with the progress. If anyone on the trip would like some specific training advice then hit the contact button and lets talk!
Happy New Year, I hope 2010 brings you all everything you wish and work for!

Finally got the new legs working, just in time to experience a 7 day cruise around the Fiji Islands!
In my new role as a roving ambassador for Blue lagoon Cruises Anne and I get to spend Christmas with the team, not too many hills to climb but lots of swimming, sun and sand!
Merry Christmas to everyone, thanks so much for the support of the Nepal trip (March full and planning November now!).
See you in the new year!

Well training is on hold at the moment.
Anne and I had a great 6 days in Rarotonga, I swam more than ever before in my life, had the best snorkeling of any trip so far, came home, picked up the new legs and am now a bit of a cripple! Left leg fantastic, new right leg has blistered the stump and done some damage to the stump so back to the limb center for a rebuild. I'll need to be very careful to ensure the stump heals, very frustrating as with the swimming and gym work last week, I was starting to feel some real power coming back (a frustrated Mark is not pleasant!)
About 19 weeks until Nepal, plenty of time for those of you with legs to get them pumping, for those of us that rely on Carbon Fibre legs, just enough time to get them right and then work the muscles!

Coming to Nepal with me in March? While you don't need to be a super fit athlete, crikey, I certainly am far from that! You do need to have a moderate level of fitness, not so much to do the trek but to enjoy it!
As a double amputee, it takes me about 3 times as long to train for an event than a 'legged' version, hence out on the hills now.
Anne and I (plus the dogs) did 4 hours up on Mt Isobel on Thursday, I am trying to do 1 - 2 hours every second day of hill work, mostly up, a wee bit down (hard on the stumps!).
Over the next few weeks I will post a training program for the Nepal trek, keep an eye out for it and most importantly, email Tali at World Expeditions to reserve your spot on the trek! Only 20 places, be quick!

Canada?
Just working on a program that will hopefully see me in Canda (BC and Alberta) in late Feburary 2010. If you are keen on taking advantage of the saving in travel costs I'd love to inspire your team for the challenges ahead! Just hit the contact button and we will see what we can arrange!

Breaking News!
I have been selected as a finalist in the CEG Professional Speaker of the Year Awards.
Nepal March 2010
I have teamed up with the great people at World Expeditions to host a trek to the Gokyo Lakes in Nepal, a fantastic trek from March 21 to April 10 (ex Auckland).
This is an opportunity to trek the high mountains of Nepal with me, to gain real insight into not just the mounatins but the people of this special region. We will travel through the high mountain villages of the Sherpa, many of which have been with me on Cho Oyu and Everest, to visit families that I support through education of their children and the work of our charity, Limbs4All. Part of the expedition fee will be a donation to Limbs4All (visit L4A at limbs4all.com ) check it out, a truly sustainable charity!
Visit World Expeditions to sign up, be quick we can only take 20 people. World Expeditions or call them on 0800 350 083.

Well just home from the 2009 Global Creative Leadership Summit in New York, what a fantastic experience, to sit around the table with world leaders in politics, business, charity and the arts, to have them listen to and comment on your views.
The trip would of been so much more difficult if the people at Air New Zealand hadn't stepped up to the plate and funded my airfares - a huge thank you for allowing another kiwi on to the world stage. Keep an eye out for a full report (it will be a downloadable pdf)

The USA!
Several exciting opportunities have come to fruition over the last few days.
The first 2 weeks of March 2010 will see me presenting motivational and inspirational sessions to youth in New York, Philly, Washington DC and Nashville. I am keen to make the most of the opportunity so will head over early and stay later, giving other schools and corporates an opportunity to use my services - drop me a line if you know of any!
Equally exciting, I have just accepted an invitation to be a panelist at the 2009 Creative Leadership Summit (23 - 25 September) in New York, a huge honour. Pop along to their website www.creativeleadershipsummit.org
Check out the delegates, a very exciting summit - now I just need to fund the trip!

Well finally home from a great adventure in China, apologies if your emails haven't been answered yet, I will get to them before the end of the weekend!
Haba Mountain was a great climb, thanks to the training on Mt Lyford and up Jacks Pass!
I'm off to speak to Aidenfield School tomorrow, then on the panel of RadioNZ in the afternoon, after that home and crash! It has been a busy few weeks.
I'll put up some articles and pictures soon so you can experience China as I have!

Still hot and muggy here in Beijing, but I can see from my hotel the Forbidden City and further. Thanks to the team from Discovery Beijing for treating me to an awesome dinner last night! Beijing Duck in Beijing!
Off to the mountain today.
30 July, 2009
Hot and muggy here in Beijing, also foggy so only can see half a block or so.
Had a great day power walking around Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City (my preferred method of sightseeing) but par-boiled the stumps in the heat (about 33'C according to my altimeter), nothing a cold bath and a colder beer won't fix.
Ignore the comment below about Twitter and FaceBook, they are currently blocked here so no luck doing the easy update, I'll keep trying though!
Off to Shangi La in the mountains tomorrow, can't wait for the cool mountain air. As always, Discovery are being fantastic hosts!
29 July, 2009
Check out the speaking page for a great special offer, some positive motivation and skills to turn the recession into opportunity!
29 July, 2009
Yep, I know, long time between updates!
Always remember, you can follow the adventures, trials and tribulations via Twitter (MarkInglis), updated much more often I can assure you!
Well I am sitting in Koru on the way to China for another adventure, a climb of Haba Mountain, it is on the border of the Yunnan province and Tibet.
I am helping train 40 Chinese mountaineers in high altitude and snow survival culminating in a climb of Haba Mountain, 5400m.
While in Everest terms 5400m is just a bump, Haba is a serious peak, especially aswe will only be there 9 days so minimal acclimatisation. I think it will hurt!
It has been an exciting few months, busy motivating a range of corporate and charity groups around NZ and Australia.
Keep an eye on the site and twitter for updates, I will try and be a bit more prompt!

More Everest news, Whetu, Woody and 'Narly are in Lukla on the way out from yet another successful summit of Everest on May 23, well done guys.
A beautiful day in Hanmer Springs, James Styler has passed through on his epic marathon, he lifted over 15,000kg and did a 4 hour mountain run yesterday, 230km on the bike today and then the ChCh Marathon tomorrow - HUGE effort James.

Well it has been 3 years since I stood on the summit of Everest, time flies, actually it must be time to find another 'Everest'!
I have just finished 3 days of school presentations, I met some awesome kids at lots of Auckland schools as part of the Writers In Schools programme,a special thanks to the Book Council for organising it.
Hi to the great kids at:
Remuera Primary, Epsom Normal Primary, Clendon, Takanini, James Cook High, Mission Hill, Elm Park and the team that came along to Howick Library, thanks for your time and energy!
Straight after the school programme I jumped on a plane and have spent a day at La Trobe University presenting to the Prosthetics degree course and then to the team from the 2009 Chain Reaction Charity ride, both here in Melbourne.
Well it is back home to NZ to the NZ Post Book Awards on the 20th, it has been awesome just to get to be a finalist!, if we get further, then that will be a huge bonus - thanks to all the schools that have voted for 'High Tech Legs On Everest'!
6 May , 2009
The first summit of Everest for 2009 season has just been completed by Mingma Sherpa, I wish every one on the hill a successful and safe summit, coming home is the important bit!
5 May , 2009
The 'Motivate Your Staff Special' - Book any programme with a 50% desposit in May or June (for delivery at anytime that we work out) and get a 20% saving!
15 April , 2009
On April 24 Lincoln University are awarding me with the degree Doctor Of Natural Resources honoris causa, a huge honour, but no, you won't need to call me 'Dr Inglis'!
Have you seen the April edition of MindFood? check out the Community Success section (page 44) for a review of the projects I have been involved in over recent times.
The new legs are still working well and I'm back out on the bike again which feels fantastic. I was in training for a 500km mountainbike tour in October, from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise funds for the Cambodia Trust but this now looks like being postponed to 2010, the recession seems to be hitting all aspects of our lives at present.
Make sure you check out the SPEAKING page for a link to an overview of my presentation and consultation programs, there is something there for everyone, the programs and presentations are essential tools to help all companies through these tough times, tools to find the advantages not the disadvantages!
Hit the CONTACT button if you need details, I'll look forward to hearing from you!

Well 2009 is well and truly on the way.
After 9 months trying to make some new leg technology work I tossed it in and went back to 'PTB' sockets, what a transformation, thanks to the team at the ChCh Limb Centre I now have the best legs I have ever had in my 26 years as an amputee - thanks guys for giving me my ability back!
As always there are lots of things on, if you know Scotty Brown of Christchurch, then make sure you hook up to his charity ride, 1000k non-stop in early April, finishing at the Graperide, donate and help the challenged kids in ChCh, I will!
Keep an eye out over the next month for some exciting announcements!
I have been speaking to groups from around the world (Hospira, Mundipharma, OCS, Health Insurers), the messages of challenge and coping with change are so important at the moment.
March 6, 2009, Hintons Vineyard, 'A Taste of Everest', an evening of Nepali and Tibetan food, culture and my stories from both countries. Ring Hinton's on 03 358 8599 to book (cheap as chips at $49) for a great evening.
We farewelled Bob on Saturday, a terribly sad day, he defined what 'friend' means, our thoughts go out to Anne, Hayden and Bridie.
12 November 2008
Finally back at home in Hanmer Springs after an exciting few months of presenting around the world and catching with family and friends scattered over the globe.
Anne spent 4 weeks with Amanda in the Uk, visiting Switzerland (they got to see the Eiger first hand, beat me to it!), Scotland and all over the UK.
Our paths overlapped for literally a few minutes in Heathrow, as I was flying home and Anne flying in!
I spent 5 days in London presenting to several groups including the staff at the luxurious Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington High St (focusing on service and attitude). In my role as the Wine Ambassador for the Hermitage at Mount Cook I presented my view of our Southern Alps, (the training ground for my ascent of Everest) and the opportunities that the Hermitage offers to outbound tour operators.
I had the opportunity to travel to Austria and present at the Franciscan University (in Gameling, 180km south of Vienna), a magical part of the world.
Since getting back I have presented in Australia, Queenstown (training the Milford and Routeburn Track guides), Auckland and a busy time coming up.
Early 2009 will see me presenting on attitude, challenge and change in India, Thailand, NZ, Australia and back to the UK.
A tough time coming?
In many ways the way we do business in the world has had more than just a hiccup, as most bankers will tell you the world has changed.
Many of my clients are now recognising that the lessons I have learnt in tackling what many consider insurmountable challenges in my life are intimately applicable to their situation, the future of many businesses will be reliant on the attitude and commitment of their staff and as such are putting even more effort into ensuring they have the skills to achieve!
If you wish to invest in upskilling and motivating your team, drop me a line!
Mid 2008
Life is always busy for Anne and I but at the moment it is at ‘warp’ speed. While we are both immersed in growing PeakFuel (the leading high performance nutrition products developed from my experience in science, wine and elite sports) I have also been privileged to be spending time sharing my techniques for overcoming those stumbling blocks in life and turning them into stepping stones with a wide range of people, companies like Mercedes, Microsoft, Porter Davis Homes (Australia), First National Real Estate, the Halogen Foundations Youth Leaders series and many many more.
In our ‘spare’ time with the help of our other trustees and some extremely generous people we now have Limbs4All up and running as a leading sustainable charity.
I’m finally back on my 29’er single speed mountain bike in the forests of Hanmer Springs, what a fantastic place to recharge the batteries.
The next few months will see us all over NZ and Australia with PeakFuel and Motivation work, also up to Malaysia and onto the UK and Europe (all of October).
Keep an eye here for regular updates on our adventures in this exciting world we all share.
